This past Sunday, Becky and I announced that we will be leaving Texas and be moving to New York City in order to plant a new church in the United States’ largest city. We will be going as North American Mission Board (NAMB) church planting missionaries. We believe God is calling us there to work with people who know little to nothing about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
As the metro area of New York City continues to grow past 23 million people, we see this as a strategic place to begin a new work. Many studies have calculated that only around 4% of the city’s population are born-again Christians which is exactly why we were drawn to the Big Apple in the first place.
We believe that New York City is so expensive (and was named Wall Street Journal’s “Most Expensive Place in the World to Live” back in 2015) partly because of its vast influence on the world today. It is annually on the top of Forbes “Most Influential Cities List” because it leads the world in a variety of ways: news and broadcast networks, banking and finance, business and advertising, diversity of language and culture. There are over 800 different languages spoken there daily, and people from every nation call New York City home.
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations…” – Matthew 28:19a
If we are to reach the nations, then let’s take the Good News of Jesus to the one city that can impact the world unlike any other. Let’s see the gospel transform lives and give new life to the city.
We will include many more details along with ways you can help and participate as our last Sunday at Bethesda approaches, which will be April 3. We are both excited and nervous. We still have many questions ourselves about how the process works on becoming church planters. So we don’t have all the specifics on how it will all happen, but we know we are called…so we are going. Please pray for us as we make this transition.
