The Saucedas Learn About GenSend

Have you heard about GenSend? It is NAMB's summer mission program for young adults (19-25) who are mission-minded and interested in ministering in 1 of 21 U.S. cities for 6-weeks. This summer Becky and I got to hang out with the NYC cohort. The group consisted of about 40 young adults, mostly college students, who were from all over. This week we had the opportunity to hear them speak about their experiences in NYC.

They split up into 4 groups and focused their efforts into the following 4 regions of NYC:
-Red Hook
-Crown Heights
-Lower Manhattan
-East Flatbush

Apparently, they did a great job jumping into their regions and becoming a part of the local community. They volunteered at local places.  Joined exercise classes. Frequented coffee shops. Led VBS and other kids activities. Drank coffee. Took surveys. Drank coffee. Met people in the park. Made friends playing basketball. Drank more...coffee.

I think I read that after the you apply the cost is only $100. To my knowlegde, that includes transportation (subway) and a place to stay (Long Island University dorms) and an expense card to help pay for food. From listening to these young adults, they loved their experience and are pumped to come back and get involved with more urban ministries. According to their website, GenSend "...immerses young adults into an urban context to gain a practical knowledge of the realities of missions and leadership. Participants will spend their time learning to live their life on mission under the guidance of urban ministry leaders."

Their summer is coming to a close, but it was very encouraging to listen to how God had grown their hearts for NYC and for the church plants that they got to work with during their stay. Also, it was convicting to hear many of them explain that there is clearly much more work to be done. So...if any of you GenSenders are thinking about coming back to NYC and want to get involved with a church plant in the Bronx, please come help us out. You'd love it and we are going to need a ton of help.

Please pray that God would send us co-laborers in this harvest field.
